Backroads & Wildlife of New Hampshire

Sunday, August 11 – Tue, August 13

Join us as we travel the New Hampshire backroads through quaint small towns and villages on this New Hampshire wildlife safari.  Explore New Hampshire’s wildlife as local guides take us on a moose tour, and we’ll enjoy a three-hour eco-cruise on Lake Ombagog in the Ombagog Wildlife Preserve.

DAY 1 – We’ll enjoy a drive along the Kankamagus Highway, a National Scenic Byway, stopping for photos along the way at one of the scenic overlooks and at a covered bridge.  We’ll stay for two nights at the Jordan Hotel & Conference Center at Sunday River, located in Maine near the New Hampshire border.  The hotel is tucked among the pines at the base of the ski slope, and boasts beautiful views in all directions. After dinner at the hotel, we’ll head to Gorham and board one of Gorham Moose Tour’s buses for a moose & wildlife tour with our experienced wildlife guide that knows just where to find moose!  Evening is the ideal time to view these majestic animals, and their buses are specially equipped with spot lights to help find and view moose after dark.  They have a 93-97% moose sighting success rate, so don’t forget your camera! DAY 2 – We will visit the Rocks Estate in Bethlehem, NH for a hands-on experience that includes facts and stories about two of the region’s most often encountered animals, moose and bears.  Have you ever wondered  how much a moose calf or a bear cub weighs at birth, what a bear den looks like, or what bears and moose like to eat? Our presentation will follow both species in a year of their life cycles to see how they interact with each other and with humans. Then, we’ll head to nearby Littleton, NH, ranked in the top ten best small downtowns in America.  You’ll have time for lunch and to visit Chutters, a candy store and gift shop that boasts the title of the longest candy counter in the world! Littleton is also home to excellent antiquing and has many restaurants & shops.  After relaxing at the hotel, we’ll experience a three-hour wildlife cruise on Lake Umbagog, with incredible scenery and abundant wildlife, all from the comfort of our 24-foot pontoon boats. They routinely spot deer, Bald Eagles, osprey, loons and an occasional moose or Black Bear.  (B)

DAY 3 – We will stop in Maine at Pietree Orchards for some fresh-picked Maine blueberries, produce, and bakery goods.  Then, we’ll head back into New Hampshire, where we’ll make a photo stop at beautiful Jackson Falls before taking time for lunch and shopping in quaint North Conway Village, where you’ll find Zebs General Store, filled with nearly 5,000 unique products, all made in New England.  We’ll stop in the quaint lakeside village of Wolfboro to tour the Wolfeboro Historical Society’s Clark House Museum Complex, a living history museum. The Clark house was built in 1778 and was the family farm on Lake Winnepesaukee for three generations.  Volunteers have restored a number of antique fire-fighting pieces used in Wolfeboro dating from the mid 1800's, and they are exhibited in the adjacent Firehouse. The South Wolfeboro one-room schoolhouse is also part of the complex, and an 1820’s barn that houses an eclectic display of antique items from the local area.  You’ll also have free time to explore the Wolfeboro charming downtown before we return to the Cape.
