Pennsylvania Christmas Traditions

Wednesday, December 4 – Friday, December 6

Enjoy the Pennsylvania Amish Farmlands picturesque scenery as you meander across country roads where time seems to stand still, take in the holiday lights at Longwood Gardens, learn about the Amish, visit the quaint town of Lititz, and see the amazing stage production “The Miracle of Christmas” at Sight & Sound Theatre.

DAY 1 –Experience the Joys of the Season at A Longwood Christmas.  We’ll arrive late afternoon, and you’ll have time to explore the Conservatory, which is filled with beautiful flowers, poinsettias, a 24-foot tall decorated white fir tree, and a miniature model train rumbling along almost 400 feet of track.  You’ll have time to stroll the conservatory, enjoy dinner at the Café or restaurant, and see the outdoor gardens twinkle with a half a million lights hung from and wrapped around the trees in this winter wonderland.  Enjoy the view from above at their three Treehouses, see the Pierce duPont house decorated for the holidays, and watch the outdoor fountains awash in holiday color dance to classic Christmas music.  Our hotel for this trip is the Country Inn & Suites in Lancaster, PA.

DAY 2 – Our local guide will take us to the heart of the Amish Farmlands to see the pristine Amish farms, one-room schoolhouses, Amish "phone booths" and see farmers working the fields with their horse or mule-drawn plows. We’ll learn about the Amish beliefs and traditions and stop at an Amish-owned and operated roadside stand, Eli’s.  There, you’ll find a large assortment of home-made crafts including quilts, baked goods, canned items, home-made noodles, apple butter and more.  Everyone will receive a hand-made soft pretzel and enjoy a home-made birch beer, lemonade or root beer.  Then, travel to the charming town of Lititz, where we will learn about its’ Moravian beginnings and see the downtown filled with restored buildings from the mid-1700’s that now house unique boutiques, shops and taverns.  You’ll have time for some Christmas shopping, to sample the delicious chocolates at Wilbur’s Chocolate, and have lunch at one of the two old-time soda fountains or one of the many downtown restaurants. Relax at the hotel, then depart for a traditional Pennsylvania Smorgasbord dinner at Hershey Farms Restaurant featuring golden fried chicken, freshly carved turkey, ham balls, Amish stuffing, vegetables, homemade mashed potatoes, soups, salad bar, breads, a dessert bar and much more!  After dinner, we’ll visit Sight & Sound’s Millennium Theatre for the inspirational show “The Miracle of Christmas” brought to life on a panoramic stage with spectacular scenery & special effects and live animals – on stage and in the aisles. DAY 3 – We’ll stop at Kitchen Kettle Village, home to over 40 local shops in one outdoor shopping village.  You’ll find homemade Lancaster County food, souvenirs, jewelry, bath and body products, the Jam & Relish Kitchen and more.
