Concord's "Storied" History
Friday, May 8
Concord, MA is a community rich in historical association, renowned as the site of the battle that began the American Revolution and as the home of the most original thinkers and writers of the American literary renaissance including Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Louisa May Alcott.
Enjoy a guided tour of Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House, the Alcott family's home, where she penned her classic work, "Little Women" at a shelf desk built by her father especially for her. Alcott set "Little Women" in this home, causing guests to comment that "a visit to Orchard House is like walking through the book".
We'll also visit Nathaniel Hawthorne's Old Manse, where he wrote a set of short stories (Mosses from an Old Manse) when he lived there. The landscape Hawthorne describes is still recognizable to a present-day visitor more than 160 years later. The Concord River flows serenely past the Manse and under its neighbor, the North Bridge, site of the famous "shot heard round the world" that started the American Revolution.
Enjoy a hearty full lunch at the historic Colonial Inn, which has welcomed guests for over 300 years, before ending our "storied" adventure at the Concord Museum. The museum houses one of the oldest and most treasured collections of Americana in the country and features exhibits & artifacts on Concord's remarkable revolutionary and literary history. (some stairs are required at historic home tours).
