DAY 1 - Experience the vibrant foliage of Portland on a 1 hour 45 minute harbor cruise. Experience the iconic lighthouses and sights of Portland Harbor and the picturesque waterway Diamond Pass. After our cruise, you'll have free time for lunch and shopping in downtown Portland. Then, visit Thompson's Orchard, a family owned, local favorite since 1906, for some farm fresh apples, spiced cider, and freshly made donuts. Everyone will get a donut and, as their schedule permits, get a look at the orchards on a tractor ride, and a tour of the cider mill. We'll travel to Sunday River's Grand Summit Resort Hotel, located minutes from picturesque Bethel Village in western Maine's Mahoosuc Mountains, where we will stay for two nights. (B)
DAY 2 - We'll visit Jackson, NH, to witness the Return of the Pumpkin People, where local people and businesses create pumpkin characters and scenes to compete for the best display. We'll stop at the Jackson Covered Bridge and the cascading Jackson Falls as we travel through the quaint village in search of Pumpkin People. Then, we'll spend the afternoon at the famous Fryeburg Fair that has been held on the same grounds since 1885. It is considered to be one of the best agricultural fairs in the U.S., and offers nonstop livestock, agriculture and farming exhibitions with over 3,000 head of large animals - cattle, horses, oxen, steers, ponies and hundreds of smaller animals - sheep, goats, hogs, poultry, rabbits, and more. Tonight, we'll enjoy an included dinner at the resort. (B,D)
DAY 3 - Our Resort is the host for the annual Sunday River Fall Festival, and you'll have the day to enjoy all the activities at the property. There will be live entertainment featuring local bluegrass bands; the Annual Blue Mountain Arts & Crafts Festival, with over 45 regional artists and artisans; "Taste of Maine" food vendors offering Maine foods - from lobster rolls to blueberry cobblers; horsedrawn wagon rides; chainsaw & woodcarving demonstrations; and the Annual North American Wife Carrying Championships, in which competitors carry their wives over a 280-yard obstacle course with two log obstacles and a water hole. Teams from across the US and Canada compete for the wife's weight in beer, five times her weight in cash, and a chance to compete at the World Championships in Finland. We'll enjoy a Chondola ride (an enclosed 8-person gondola) to the top of the mountain for some spectacular views of the Mahoosuc Mountains and the Sunday River Valley. You'll have the until the late afternoon to explore the festival and resort before we return to the Cape. (B)
